Toonumbar Dam provides water for irrigation, flood mitigation and water supply in the Richmond Valley, It is stocked with Bass by the Kyogle fishing club and is open to recreational fishing. I've camped here many times over the years, during the week it has been a peaceful place to get away from the chaos of modern life, there used to be minimal camping fees to stay at Bells Bay camping area and dogs were allowed, lately management has changed though and the camp ground is only open on weekends and camping fees have gone up considerably and sadly, dogs are no longer allowed. Camping on weekdays is now only allowed during school holidays, it seems that anything good never lasts long in this world before the bureaucracy catches up with it.
Still, it is a beautiful place to go swimming, fishing, boating, camping and bushwalking with minimal amount of infrastructure. Camp sites, rain water tanks, toilets and picnic tables are offered for public use.
